Wonderful Christmas

It was a great Christmas.  Mom and Vinny came down from Fallon to spend a few days with us.  Theresa's family was up for the day so we had 12 for a prime rib dinner.  Theresa and her sister Kris, did an excellent job preparing all the food. We all did our best to eat.  Brother John and Sara stopped by the next day.  John, Sara, Mom, and Vinny then headed back up to Fallon so John and Sara could spend a little time in the snow and appreciate the San Diego weather even more when they get back home.
I learned a new computer past time to spend even more time in front of the computer.  Video chatting.  Vinny guided me through the concept of how to get setup.  I took a cheap little camera that Katie got for her birthday and hooked it into the computer. It is has a little solid state memory device built into it, but if you connect it to the computer with a USB cable it will act as a webcam.  I manged to get that and Skype hooked up and we spent some quality time with my brother Karl and his family Christmas night.  The next day Vinny felt real sorry for me and got me a real webcam.  We got to call my sister Heidi and chat with her family the next day.
 It was real fun.
If you've got 7 minutes to spare you may want to see the play that Katie put together with her cousins and Julie for Christmas.  Katie came up with story, wrote up scripts for all the players and had rehearsals before the big night after Christmas dinner.
If the video doesn't work here, you can find it on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hpPFVyIFiY
Here is a picture of the wine glasses I made for Theresa. They are made from Quina wood and then the goblets are attached.  In the middle is a coffee mug I made for her birthday.  It is made from 129 separate pieces of Pink Ivory wood.

We hope everyone had a great Christmas.

New Picture Show

I put a slideshow on the Blog entitled "Old Family Photos"  It as a couple of new pictures that I received from my newly discovered cousin, Suzy (Koch) George.  If you have any input, comments, or corrections, please let me know.  I also have higher resolution of the scans if anybody needs them.

Christmas lights are up

Actually they've been up for a week now I just have fallen out of the blogging mode and it has taken a cold morning to get going again.  It's 35 degrees right now and the wind maxed out at 75 mph yesterday.  May not seem like much for folks from the winter states, but it's cold for us desert dwellers.  The lights on the house are not really as bright as the image looks, it was just the exposure I had to use to get the picture, but it looks kinda cool.

This other picture is from the model train yard.  There is a group here in town that build 1/8 scale trains.  One of the club members has roughly a mile worth of track winding around his property.
They have switches and bridges and little towns to ride through.  They open it to invited guests a couple of time a year and we take the kids when we can.  This was the first time we came during December. They had a lot of Christmas light displays up.  Julie was a little nervous riding out into the darkness on the first trip, but on the second go around she was playing tour guide.  "And off to the left you will see the snowman family, on the right is a small herd of reindeer."
This is an older picture of the train rides.  Back when Katie was three.

Halloween for the Girls

The girls went out for Halloween last night and had a great time.  Julie had to have her lady bug costume.  Theresa sewed up some extra arms and attached them to her original set.  Katie wanted to be an Indian, Theresa sewed this up from scratch.  I think it came out beautifully.  Katie wanted to be called 'Little Fox', but everyone kept calling her Pocahontas.
They got to go on a Trick or Treat walk at day care and got a  lot of candy there.  They had a Halloween parade at school and got some non-candy treats there.  Then they walked around the neighborhood, through the drizzle, and got more candy then.  Katie was even blessed to get some religious literature in her bag!
We are sitting around today watching the one of our four days per year of rain.  Using it as a good excuse for not getting anything done today.

The long awaited second story!

The Further Adventures of Bob the Penguin

The Case of the Missing Library Book

By

Katie Koch

Chapter 1

Bob the penguin sat in the fuzzy red couch in the library.  He was reading a book about the founder of Penguin City, Mr. A. J. Puffin.  For some strange reason, Mr. Puffin was Bob’s great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather.  Bob was taking notes about the book, when suddenly Mrs. Macaroni, the librarian rushed up to Bob.

“Bob, Bob oh I’m so glad you are still here!” she gasped.

“What’s the matter ma’am?” Bob asked.

“There is a book that I’m looking for that five citizens have asked for and it’s not on the bookshelf where it’s supposed to be!”  Mrs. Macaroni sobbed.

“Could you show me?” Bob asked.  They walked to the shelf where the adventure stories were kept.  In the middle of the shelf was a big gap.

“What is the name of this missing book?” Bob asked.

Mr. Puffin: What He Really Did.” said Mrs. Macaroni.

He took out his notebook and wrote: Missing book Mr. Puffin: What He Really Did

Bob looked carefully at the shelf.  He noticed some crumbs on the shelf and the floor below.  He picked some up between his flippers and sniffed.  He placed a small amount on the tip of his tongue and tasted them. He then wrote:  found crumbs at crime scene possibly from a donut.

“I see.” Bob said.  “I think I shall question these five penguins.”

“Would you give me a list of these penguins?” Bob asked.

“Certainly” she said.  Bob looked over the list.  It said:

Joe Mackerael

Lisa Wuddles

Micheal Weavles

Marti Penguin

Joanna Winger

“Isn’t Joanna Winger your assistant?” Bob said.

“Yes.” Mrs. Macaroni said.

Bob looked at the list again.

“MARTI PENGUIN! That’s my mother!” Bob yelled.

“Quiet Bob! This is the library!” Mrs. Macaroni hissed.

“But I told her specifically not to check out any adventure books, because I’d buy them for her birthday!”

“Well, Bob, when your mother came in she said that she needed to read the book badly and that she’d do anything to get her wings on that book!”

Chapter 2

Bob set out for igloo number 265 W. Curry Street.  He got there and opened the door.  He went to his closet and pulled out his purple and green striped bowtie, and put it on.  He looked around to make sure that everything was nice and neat.  It was.  So Bob walked out the door and locked it.  He looked at the list: Joe Mackerael

“First stop, 173 S. Puffin Avenue.” Bob said. Bob soon arrived at Joe’s house.  He knocked on the door.

“Come in please.”  Bob came in.  Joe was sitting on his chair, grape slushie in one hand, remote in the other.  The TV was on the hockey channel and the city’s home town team, the Penguin City Flappers, versus the Polar Bear County Slammers.

“Just in time Bob! They just started! Come sit and have a grape slushie!” Joe said.

“Sorry Joe. I’m not here to watch the game, bit I will take a slushie and could you turn off the TV because I need to ask you a couple or so questions.”

“Sure Bob.” Joe said.  Joe got Bob’s slushie, handed it to Bob and turned off the TV.

“So Bob, what are your questions?’ Joe asked.  Bob pulled out his notebook.

“Where were you at 11:30 this morning?” Bob asked.

“Sleeping.” Joe said.

Bob said “One last question.”

“What would that be?” Joe asked.

“Would you mind me looking around your house?” Bob asked.  Bob was always polite.

“No problem.” Joe said.  Bob went upstairs and looked around carefully. No, the book was definitely not here.

“Sorry to bother you Joe.” Bob said.

“No problem Bob, no problem.” Joe said.  Bob walked out the door; he looked at the list LISA WUDDLES.

“Next stop, Super Glacier.” Bob said. He set out for the supermarket.

Chapter 3

Bob soon arrived at the Super Glacier.  He had always been a fast walker.  He went in. It was very busy on the weekends.  Bob looked around and soon spotted Lisa Wuddles. She was asking an elderly penguin if she need any help.

Bob walked over and said “Excuse me Mrs. Wuddles, could I talk to you privately?”

“Sure Bob. Let’s go talk in my office shall we?” she said.  As they neared the door Bob noticed the plaque said in golden letters ‘Assistant Manager:  Private’. As they entered the room Bob saw how neat it was. Bob sat down in a fluffy pink chair.  He pulled out his notebook and wrote:  sitting in Lisa Wuddles’ office.  11:30  book found yes or no

“So, Mrs. Wuddles where were you at 11:30 this morning?” asked Bob.

“Why I was at the hair salon getting my perm up-to-date.  Do you like it?”  she asked, tossing it over her shoulder.  Bob didn’t answer.  Instead he wrote in his notebook:  11:30, at hair salon getting perm redone.

“Do you mind if I look around ma’am?” Bob asked.

“Go ahead Bob, be my guest!” Mrs. Wuddles said.  Bob looked around carefully.  He opened his notebook and wrote:  book found yes or no book not found.  VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!

“Thank you for your time ma’am.” Bob said.  He walked out of the store.

Chapter 4

Bob looked at the list: Michael Weavles.

“I’m going to Every Icicle apparently.” Bob thought.  Bob arrived at the dinky little shop.  He saw Mr. Weavles standing by the Starbucks stand.

“Waddaya need Bob?” asked Mr. Weavles.

“Two things: a mocha shake and information.” Bob said.

“You got it Bob.” Mr. Weavles said.  He handed Bob a mocha shake. “Now, what about information?” Mr. Weavles asked.

“I need to ask you a couple of question, privately.” Bob said.  They went to Mr. Weavles office.  Bob opened his notebook and wrote: Investigating Mr. Weavles.

“Where were you at 11:30 this morning?” Bob asked.

“I was brushing my hair.” Mr. Weavles said.  Bob wrote: 11:30 – brushing hair.

“Do you mind if I look around sir?” Bob asked.

“Good heavens! Of course Bob! Go ahead!” Mr. Weavles said.  Bob looked around. He wrote in his notebook:  book not found. Driving me BONKERS!!!!

“Thank you sir.” Bob said.  He left the shop.

Chapter 5

Bob sat down on the pavement and sipped his mocha.  He checked Mr. Weavles off his list.  He looked at the next person on his list: Marti Penguin.

“Boy, this is going to be awkward!” Bob muttered.  He set off for 134 Icicle Court.  He rang the bell five minutes later.

“Come in!” a jolly voice yelled out.  Bob come in.  He went into the kitchen and found his mother eating salmon chips, with salsa in a little bowl.

“My little Bobby!  What brings you here today?”  Bob’s mother said.

“One: don’t call me Bobby, and Two: I came to ask you some questions.” said Bob stiffly.

“Oh, Bob, what are your questions?” his mother asked.

“Just a minute.” Bob pulled out his notebook: At mother’s house.  Very uncomfortable

“So, mother where were you at 11:30 this morning?” Bob asked.

“I was brushing my wings with wax.” His mother answered.

“Do you mind if I look around?” Bob asked feeling more relaxed.

“Go ahead, but I can’t’ imagine why.” she said.  Bob looked around and wrote in his notebook:  Book not found, very, very, very FRUSTRATING!!!!!

Bob said “I’m sorry to bother you, Mother.”  and walked out of the igloo.  He sat down and finished his mocha.  He wrote in his notebook: Joanna Winger only suspect left.  Very tiring.  Mother not noticing not noticing anything strange about me visiting her.  I guess I’ll be going to Joanna’s igloo.

Chapter 6

Bob started off for Joanna’s igloo.  He soon arrived. He rang Joanna’s doorbell and waited.

“Come in.” a voice said.  Bob came in.

“Miss Winger?” he called out   Joanna appeared from a nearby closet.

“Can I help you Bob?” Joanna said.

“Yes, I believe you can. I’m looking for a book called: Mr. Puffin: What He Really Did.  I believe you might know where it is.” Bob said.

“Oh, why it’s………um…….it’s at the…..library!” Joanna said, her face becoming red and sweaty.

“I’m not sure about that Miss Winger.  Last time I checked, it was gone.” Bob said.

“Oh………well……..um………um…….another citizen must…….be…reading…..it!” she stammered.

“No ma’am, I’m afraid not, nobody else has the book.” Bob said.  He opened his notebook and said, “Where were you at 11:30 this morning?”

“I………um……I was……..eating my breakfast…..at the library.” Joanna said, almost as red as a tomato and sweating like crazy.

“What did you have for breakfast today?” asked Bob.

“Why……I had…..um…some donuts, why?” Joanna mumbled

Bob wrote in his notebook:  11:30 eating breakfast at work.  Very suspicious.  Found donut crumbs at library.  Joanna ate donuts today!

“Do you mind if I look around?” Bob asked.

“N-no…..n-not….at…..all.” Joanna puffed, her face as red as dynamite and wet as a lake.  Bob looked around and walked into the closet.  He saw a hard back book lying on the floor.  He picked it up.  On the cover, in black letters it said: Mr. Puffin: What He Really Did.

“Jumping polar bears! I found the book!” Bob said quietly to himself.  He found Joanna in the living room.

“Ma’am, I think you have a bit of explaining to do.” Bob said.

Chapter 7

Joanna sat in the back room of the library, with Mrs. Macaroni, Mr.Weavles, Mrs. Wuddles, Joe Mackerael, Ms. Penguin, and Bob all looking at her with disappointment in their eyes. Mrs. Macaroni said Joanna could no longer work in the library and need to write an apology note to each person.  Joanna was very sorry for taking the book without permission and for putting her friends through this misery.  She decided to do something special for each one of her friends.  She started with Joe.  She made him grape slushies for a week.  For Mrs. Wuddles, she scrubbed the supermarket floors for a week.  For Mr. Weavles she worked at the Starbucks stand for a week.  For Bob’s mother she made salmon chips for a week.  She was very tired when it was finished, but she felt better for it.  Since Bob had solved the case, Mrs. Macaroni had given him a special library card that gave him access to all the books in the library, even the rare ones about the founding of Penguin City.

Robert's Reunion 2006

I added a slide show from the 125th reunion.  I'm not sure if everyone has seen these.

Julie's Dresser is Finished!!

It is a good feeling to have finished this project.  It was in the design phase for probably over a year.  It took me seven months to complete once I started cutting the lumber.  Although it has only been about 150 - 200 hours to  complete, I don't get to work on it every weekend.  It is made from Lyptus, which is type of eucalyptus that was developed specifically for it's lumber.  It comes from a managed plantation in South America and produce beautiful straight boards. This thing is heavy!  Probably around 150-175 lbs! It stands about 5 feet tall, she can't even reach the top drawer yet.  It has a hidden box in it for special keepsakes.  The doors in the center are shadow boxes so Julie can add her own artistic flare and change it as she grows.  We now have to get her room cleaned and re-arranged so it will fit in.  Cindy, I see your good at room cleaning, why don't you come over next week and help get this cleaned up :-)

Name Tagging in Picasa

I think it is better has a new post rather then commenting on the last.
The face recognition is a feature in Picasa web albums. If you load a slide show into Picasa you can select 'Add Name Tags' Picasa will then filter your images and try and find all the faces. It then tries and groups faces together. You must then assign name tags to the groups. You can edit individual faces out of the groups. (Karl, you caught one that I missed.) Sometimes it picks things that aren't faces, but you can edit those out. The name tags try and associate with my address book in gmail. So if I start typing Karl, it would suggest Karl Koch from my address book. If I select that 'Karl' it will generate a name tag with an alias of Karl (you can change this to something else like 'Uncle'), a name of Karl Koch, and an address field with your email. The alias is the only thing that will show up on the pictures. You can also choose to keep name tags private. For instance I could keep Katie's tag private, but leave my tag open. When someone pasts over a picture, my face will show the tag, but Katie's won't. Another interesting feature, that I haven't tried yet, is using the name tags to create new slide shows. You can ask it to show all the photos with 'Kenneth' and 'Theresa' and it will go through all the slide shows and pick out the photos with both tags. You can then share the new slide show. If the name tags you chose have emails associated with them, then you can easily send them. My biggest criticism with this is that it only works on photos that have been uploaded to the Picasa servers and not on the images that are on my computer.

Adding Slideshows

No great insight or words of wisdom, but I tried adding a slideshow module to the blog page. I can see them OK, but I'm not sure if everyone can see them. They are older slideshows, but some may not have seen them all. Let me know if you can see these slides or not.

BTW - Katie is working on the second story of Bob the Penguin so stand by!

Another week another poem

Well Theresa's car is back up and running. It was the starter, another $450! I sure miss the cars of my youth, when I could actual change a starter myself. I don't think I can work on any of the vehicles any more. I really can't complain too much, the Concorde has lasted nine years without major repairs, so I think we're getting our money's worth.
I'm still a little bummed my Chargers lost this weekend. It really wasn't fair. I'm sure John is snickering, because his Raiders got their one win for the year.
Katie had a spelling assignment and it was so nice she asked to add it to the blog also. She had to write a poem using her spelling words.

Along in the Woods
by
Katie Koch

Along the creek I walk.
And as I walk along the creek
I take a peek around.
And I notice how the foxes steal
And where the creek will meet a mountain peak
And the ring of the chickadee's call.
And the beat of the deer's hoofs deep in the trees
And I notice that what I wear is similar
To the color of a beet.

Katie's First Contribution!

Bob's Birthday Mystery

By Katie Koch

Bob the penguin sat in his igloo wondering what he would do today. Maybe he would visit Mrs. Macaroni, the librarian at the Alaska National Library. Bob decided to do that. Then Bob would buy petunia scented icicles for his mother.
"Then I will buy myself some fish for today is my birthday." Bob said to himself. Bob sighed. Everybody forgot Bob’s birthday. Always, always, Always forgot. Even his mother forgot Bob's birthday. Bob put on his red bowtie. He looked around to make sure everything was nice and neat. It was neat. So Bob walked out the door and locked it. Bob waddled to the library. When he got to the library there was a sign on the door that said, CLOSED, in capital letters.
"That's funny, the library is always open on Tuesdays." Bob thought.
"I guess I will go buy icicles for Mother. I know she loves them." Bob said to himself.
So Bob waddled to the busy street.
"Now I think I'll get the icicles last." he said. He was very hungry now.
Bob crossed the street. He went to the Super Glacier to get his can of sardines. He saw a sign on the door that said CLOSED EARLY, COME BACK LATER.
"Aw, Seal Flippers!" Bob said. He waddled to the Every Icicle supermarket. A sign on the door said, SORRY WE ARE CLOSED. Bob decided to just visit his mother instead. Bob walked to his mother's igloo. He knocked, then went in.
"Hello?" He called out. Suddenly the lights turned on!
"Happy Birthday, Bob!" a bunch of voices yelled. Bob looked around. There was Mother, Mrs. Macaroni the librarian, Mr. Wuddles, the owner of Super Glacier, and Mr. Weavles, the owner of Every Icicle.
Bob asked, "What are all you doing here?"
"Your Mother remembered your birthday so she invited all of us to celebrate with her!" Mr. Wuddles said.
"Is that why the library and stores were closed today?" asked Bob.
"I'm sorry to have troubled you, but my assistant doesn't know how to check in and out all the books." Mrs. Macaroni said replacing her pink hair band on her tuft of macaroni colored hair.
"I don't have an assistant." Mr. Wuddles said.
"Neither do I." said Mr. Weavles
"Let's Party!" Bob's mother said. Mrs. Macaroni brought out a sardine flavored cake.
"How old are you?" his mother asked.
"Thirty one." Bob said. After the cake had been eaten, they played the song, "Put your right wing in, put your right wing out, put your right wing in, then ya flap it all about!"

THE END

Finally back to work

Now that I'm back to work, I can rest a little from all the things that keep breaking at the house. First Theresa's car is continuing to give me problems. It just won't start. I've replaced the battery, then the battery cables. The repair shop says that charging system is working fine. So I'm left with the starter or some other component the is not being very obvious. The remote control for the garage door does not seem to be any happier. No matter how many how many batteries I replace or try to reprogram the receiver, it just won't open the door unless I am standing directly under it and raise the clicky directly under the motor. The electric brakes on the trailer don't seem to want to work either. The back yard is still dirt and weeds and the thunderbird makes a grinding noise when I back up. Now that I got my whining off my chest. My 7 year old got a 100% on her book that is at a 5th grade level, Julie's dresser is in the 'applying finish' stage, I came in fourth on the football pool for opening weekend, and I was well fed by my wife this weekend. So I guess it all balances out.

Second Day of Fooling around

So, here it is the second day and I've messed with the site a little more. Eventually I'll have to invite some friends and family to read this site. I added the temperature piece so everyone can see the current weather. I've added the blog list so I will get around to inviting the family to this site. On this second entry I managed to find the spell checker. Today is our Friday off. You see, Theresa and I work for the government and out here they decided to work us on a '5-4-9' work schedule. This means you work nine hours a day and get every other Friday off. So today is our Friday off. This is good because we get three day weekends twice a month! We dropped the kids off at school this morning and went out for our bi-weekly breakfast date. This afternoon I find myself playing with this rather doing any real work. Katie and Julie's cousins are coming over this evening for a sleep over so I'll be the single male, with no football, in a house full of females. Wish me luck.

First Cut at this blogging thing

So the rest of the family has been getting into blogging I thought that I would give it a try. Placing pictures on photo albums was enough effort for me. This writing stuff is pretty hard for us engeers. Katie is the true writer in the family and I'm trying to get her to contribute something, we'll see. Maybe I could give blow by blow of my woodworking projects. The fuzzy picture here is Katie's new Leporad Gecko, Faya. She really enjoys feeding her live meal worms and crickets although she still hates to touch Faya or the meal worms!
